Polish Days: Something New For A New Year

Hello lovelies. I am here to tell you that I am still alive and kicking. I've been super busy on this side of the computer, but I figured that if I had to return on ANY day, returning for Polly Polish's Polish Days challenge was a must.
You may have already noticed that this post will be pic-heavy. Why? Because this month's Polish Days challenge is all about trying something new. Working with a new technique, polish, brand... this month is all about celebrating the new year through new experiences! With all the "new" being thrown around, I decided to take way too many pictures. This, mixed with my lack of decisiveness, means LOTS of pictures today. YAY!
I was in a rather "go big or stay at home (like you always do)" mood when I decided to try water marbling for the first time. Not only was this a new technique, I also decided to employ polishes from my stash that I have never used. What I ended up with was a jelly water marble over a glitter base. I ended up liking the results much more than anticipated.
As much as I adored the afterglow of an awesome manicure, geeze! This was a LOT of work! All the mixing and dropping and dipping and drying. Add to the mix my natural clutz tendencies  and it was a mess. Every time I would get two nails done, I would end up dinging one of them. By the end of the process, I must have done each nail two times... at least.... Oi!
Let's talk details! For the base I used the enchanting butter LONDON Fairy Cake. I love this polish! It's a slightly weathered silver glitter. I was able to get full coverage after two healthy coats. Highly suggested!! For the water marble section, I used the Zoya Gloss Trio of Frida, Paloma, and Katherine. Honestly, I wasn't sure how the jellies would work, but the whole thing reminds me of stained glass.
I shall leave you with an extreme close up and my most sincere hope that 2013 has been treating you kindly so far. Here's to new experiences, new friends, and new nail polish!

  6. This is such an awesome take on the water marble. If I could actually do a water marble without it turning into a miserable disaster, I'd be tempted to be a copycat. Beautiful job!

    1. Psssssssh. Believe me, if I can do it YOU can do it. I'm such a huge clutz that I'm shocked I was able to make it work at all - constantly dinging my nails or smudging during cleanup. I vote that you give it a try!

    1. Thanks KayJay! I gotta come clean - I tried doing another water marble this week after posting, and I used cream polishes - it was HORRIBLE. I think that the jellies may be easier to work with - they are for sure more forgiving. If you have any jellies, I would suggest giving them a try for the water marble. :)

  12. I have to agree with Nicole up there - the only appropriate word is "stunning"! I like your comparison to stained glass, because it really does have that glow, the *sparkle* of bright sunlight coming through stained glass! Especially if it's coming through a spring tree, with the branches waving in the breeze - the moving sunlight/shade patterns really do make stained glass sparkle just like the glitter does! (I spent way too many hours enjoying the sunlight through the stained glass when being bored sitting in church as a child. ;)

I'm going to *have* to try this. I just need to get more jellies first... Thanks for the inspiration!!

    1. Oh man. This is seriously the most fantastic description of basking in front of stained glass. (I might have totally done the same thing as a kid. I still swoon whenever I find it these days!)
I really hope that you try this out once you get your hands on a few jellies - I would LOVE to see your take on this!

    1. Thanks Diana! I've been going through my stash, trying to find the "Perfect Top Coat," and on this mani I used Butter London's Hardwear. It's pretty decent, but when I use it I have to remember to do my nails WELL before bedtime or the finish will lose some of the shine.

Right now I'm really loving Sally Hansen's Mega Shine - it has the look of seche without the shrinkage. It takes a bit longer to dry, but to me it's worth it.
