For today's challenge, I had to create a manicure inspired by fashion... When I think of fashion (which isn't very often) I think back to the Project Runway Season 8 NYFW show by Mondo Guerra. Don't know who he is? Check out this link for a nice summary of the designer, what went down in the season finale, some Tim Gunn, and a picture of the outfits that inspired this manicure.
| It's about to get a little pic-heavy. Hold on to your hat!!! |
For this manicure I searched through my polishes, and all in all I think that I came pretty close to matching the colors used in the collection. The blue should have been brighter and should have leaned more teal, but hindsight is 20/20.
For the base color I used Cult Nails - Nevermore. It's a fantastic one-coat perfect black, and I was able to pick it up during one of the Cult Nails sales (say that five times fast!). Using my handy dotting tools, I used Milani - White on the Spot for my white dots. After about five attempts I was able to properly create the blue squares with a lot of luck, clear tape, and Essence - Let's Get Lost. Last but not least I free handed the tips of my nails with Essie - No Place Like Chrome and Essie - Off The Shoulder. I finished the job with a nice, thick coat of Seche Vite. I really like how this manicure turned out.
I liked how this manicure turned out SO MUCH that I decided to attempt it with my oft-neglected left hand. It turns out that the dots looked much better when I wasn't using my dominant hand. Huh. Weird. Rather than ruin the manicure by attempting the accent work on the ring finger and thumb, I decided to make the manicure a little more work friendly and left the fingers black. Re-reading that sentence is a little hilarious... Black isn't supposed to make your nails work friendly... Moving on!!!!
Even though I loved the pink, silver, and blue accents, I found that the polish was incredibly thick on my right hand's ring finger and thumb due to all the nail art/layers. Usually this results in the polish peeling off immediately the next day, so I made the executive decision that my left and right hands should match. I ended up taking off the polish on the two nails in question so that I could paint them black.
I am not a fashion conscious person,so I'm probably the worst person to judge... but I love this manicure. I look at my nails and think back to that awesome collection that inspired me... and I am really pleased about getting the suggestion of that look for a fraction of the cost. Yay nail polish!
On that note, I'm off to check out the other challengers! Cheers!

Thank you so much! :)
DeleteGreat job, Liz!
ReplyDeleteI love the pop of the first effort, but the second is the one I'd be apt to wear IRL.
You sure make some terrific dots!!!
Thanks Mom <3 - call me the "dot-whisperer." Seriously though, I need to learn patience because my dots are always great until I use a top coat and drag the polish around.
DeleteOoooh I love this mani! Mondo was my favorite of the all star season and he won! :D
ReplyDeleteEeeeeee! Mondo was my favorite as well - I was so happy when he won, but I still believe that he should have won his season in the first place. ;)
